Maritime economy: Throughput in the port of Rotterdam increases by 3.9

Rotterdam, 27 July 2017 - With a 3.9% increase in throughput, the port of Rotterdam can look back on a good first half of 2017. Eight of the ten market segments recorded an increase.

Container throughput (+9.3 % in TEU, +10.4 % in tons) was the main driver of overall growth in throughput. There were increases in dry bulk (+5.2 %) and general cargo (+10.8 %) and a slight decline in mineral oil products and other liquid bulk (-1.0 %). A total of 238.0 million tons of goods were handled in the first half of the year. Rotterdam's market share in the container sector compared to other ports located between Hamburg and Le Havre rose from 29.0% (Q1 2016) to 30.9% (Q1 2017).

Various companies have announced extensive investments in this half-year. Seaport dues fell by 0.4% (EUR 0.6 million) to EUR 146.0 million, while throughput increased by 3.9%. This is due to the fact that the average price per ton has fallen in some market segments as a result of the current price structure. Revenue increased by 1.3% (2.2 million euros) to 173.8 million euros. The item "other operating income" increased due to an accounting shift, resulting in an overall increase in revenue of 8.3 million euros to 342.3 million euros.

A provision of 25% (31.4 million euros) of the operating result was formed due to the corporation tax liability as at 01/01/2017. This leads to an operating result after tax of 97.8 million euros. This is comparable with the previous year's result for the same period, when part of the interest rate swap was repurchased for 32.0 million euros. The result is therefore in line with expectations according to the port operators. red/cd
