AGVs in Use in Logistics and Production
Autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) are becoming increasingly important in industry and intralogistics. In Phoenix Contact’s “Elektrisiert” podcast, Jörn Dauer explains the applications, technical requirements, and future prospects of these autonomous vehicles.
Autonomous transport systems are becoming increasingly common in warehouses and production environments. In the podcast episode “AGVs: The Silent Logistics Pros,” Christina Jahnich speaks with Jörn Dauer, Business Development Manager at Phoenix Contact, about how AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) work, their navigation, and the challenges they face.
For example, these driverless systems transport materials from the warehouse to machines and incorporate technologies for electrification, power supply, communication, safety, control, and navigation. Artificial intelligence is also used, for instance, in vehicle and route planning. “The steadily increasing use of these systems is certainly due to the fact that AGVs perform their duties efficiently and quietly around the clock, 364 days a year,” says Jörn Dauer. He adds: “Inside the transport systems, there are numerous products and solutions from Phoenix Contact packed into about one square meter.”
Looking to the future, Dauer expects a higher degree of automation in logistics and production: “There is an employee at the beginning and end of the logistics chain. Otherwise, autonomous systems do the work, which, among other things, significantly reduces safety requirements.”
