Port of Hamburg
More containers, more bulk goods in inland shipping
The data on inland shipping published by the Northern Statistical Office for the Port of Hamburg for the first quarter shows an increase of 20 percent year-on-year to 34,640 TEU (20-foot standard containers).
At 2.57 million tons, the total volume of goods transported by inland waterway vessel between the Port of Hamburg and inland areas also achieved double-digit growth of 12.1% in the first three months of 2019.
The fact that the Elbe has been almost impassable since May due to low water levels has had a dampening effect on the volume development of inland shipping. Against this backdrop, Stefan Kunze, Head of the Port of Hamburg Representation in Dresden, believes that it is difficult to predict how the volume of goods transported by barge on the Elbe will develop this year.
The expected increase in seaport-hinterland traffic over the next few years should also open up very good prospects for Hamburg for more transportation by inland waterway vessel in the Elbe river region. However, according to Kunze, the infrastructure needs to be better adapted to the operational requirements of inland shipping. "The digitalization and networking of modes of transport, construction measures on the waterways and optimized coordination of inland waterway vessel calls in the Port of Hamburg will ensure more cargo and easier handling of transport chains along the Elbe and the Elbe Lateral Canal in the future," emphasizes Stefan Kunze. The 2030 maritime traffic forecast predicts above-average growth for seaport-hinterland traffic in Germany.
