Yusen Logistics opens new logistics center in Bottrop
On February 6, Yusen Logistics celebrated the opening of its new logistics center in Bottrop with a festive ceremony together with the logistics real estate company Prologis and key stakeholders. Covering an area of just over 100,000 m², the warehouse offers a total storage capacity of up to 50,000 pallet spaces, including a 3,700 m² mezzanine level.
The event took place directly in the new warehouses. The traditional ribbon cutting and the Japanese sake barrel ceremony "kagami-biraki", accompanied by a Japanese drummer group, were part of the festivities. Hiroki Harada, Chairman and Representative Director as well as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Yusen Logistics Co., Ltd. traveled from Japan to attend in person.
DGNB platinum certifications targeted
Prologis revitalized the former steel industry site and integrated CO₂-reduced building materials, cradle-to-cradle certified components and a photovoltaic system with a capacity of 3.6 MWp in the new logistics facility. The companies Prologis and Yusen Logistics are aiming for DGNB Platinum certification for the site. Thanks to the sustainable building and the resulting optimization of distribution processes and transport routes, Yusen Logistics says it saves more than 7,000 tons of CO₂ annually. The building was also designed with the well-being of employees in mind and integrates measures based on the Well Standards - an internationally recognized certification system for health-promoting work environments.
"This center symbolizes the successful integration of Japanese values, such as quality and innovation, with European work culture. It is a place where collaboration and diversity are lived," explained Toshikazu (Bob) Shiota, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yusen Logistics (Deutschland) GmbH.
The new center serves exclusively as a central warehouse for Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V., one of Yusen Logistics' longest standing and largest customers. With 75 daily inbound and outbound movements, the center optimizes the entire supply chain, reduces environmental impact and enables the fast turnover of products. "With this logistics center, we are demonstrating how modern supply chains can create real value through efficiency and sustainability. It is not just an investment in our infrastructure, but in the further development of our partnerships - with a view to the challenges and opportunities of a globally networked world," says Bruno Jacques, Managing Director of Yusen Logistics (Deutschland) GmbH and Yusen Logistics (Benelux) B.V.
The site creates jobs for 150 to 200 employees and integrates both existing specialists from the Duisburg region and new talent. Ergonomic workstations, heated warehouses and green facades contribute to a pleasant working environment. In addition, the site offers modern offices, comfortable break rooms and excellent connections to shopping and catering facilities, including a snack bar located directly on the site.
Strategic importance for Yusen Logistics
The new location underlines the global growth strategy of Yusen Logistics and marks a decisive step in the expansion of the European network. With Bottrop, Yusen Logistics increases its warehouse space in Germany by 57,000 m² to a total of around 217,500 m² - a growth of 30% compared to before. Hiroki Harada, Chairman and Representative Director of Yusen Logistics Co, Ltd, emphasized: "This logistics center embodies our vision to provide globally integrated and sustainable logistics solutions. It demonstrates how we can provide outstanding services to our customers worldwide through local expertise and global standards. Bottrop is another step in our strategy to expand our presence in Europe and contribute to a greener future."
