EPAL: Pallets are indispensable for supply chains
The European Pallet Association (EPAL) supports the demands that wooden packaging production and repair should be counted among the systemically relevant industries, as they are crucial for the availability of goods and services throughout Europe.
Without load carriers, which include over 600 million EPAL pallets and 20 million pallet cages, there would be significant supply bottlenecks in the food, chemical and medical industries. In these supply chains, wooden pallets and packaging are crucial for smooth and uninterrupted transportation, EPAL stated in a press release.
The wood packaging industry in Italy, the UK and Belgium already have systemically important status. A similar decision is expected in France and the Netherlands. In Germany, the federal system has so far prevented a uniform nationwide solution. EPAL therefore supports the Federal Association of Wooden Packaging, Pallets and Export Packaging (HPE), which is pushing for a quick and uniform solution.
Furthermore, as an international association, EPAL supports the demand of its members in the national associations of all European countries, producers and repairers of EPAL load carriers, to recognize their status as systemically relevant companies during the crisis - and beyond - and thus ensure the indispensable flow of goods.
Christian Kühnhold, CEO of EPAL: "Two billion Euro pallet rotations per year speak for themselves. The current supply of foodstuffs is only possible with the corresponding goods from the industry, but also with the availability of the load carriers. Everyone involved with the pallet is doing everything necessary to guarantee the significantly higher demand in certain areas."
