Higher total throughput between Antwerp and ports in Central and Eastern Europe

Traffic flows between the Belgian port of Antwerp and the hinterland market in Austria and Hungary have increased significantly.

In 2017, total throughput for Austria alone amounted to around 3.5 million tons, an increase of over 14% compared to the previous year. Accordingly, hinterland connections are also being expanded, particularly by rail. Since 2015, rail services to Austria have been expanded from one to three and two regular rail connections to Hungary have been established. There is also a new intermodal connection between Antwerp, Vienna and Budapest. The intermodal network operator Hupac added a new scheduled service between the three cities with two round trips per week to its network with effect from September 11, 2018. "The growing intermodal offer between Antwerp and Central and Eastern Europe is a very welcome development for shippers in Austria and Hungary. The port has invested heavily in expanding its hinterland connections to these countries in recent years," explains Walter Holzhammer, Port Representative for Austria and Hungary at the Antwerp Port Authority. Among other things, steel, machinery, cranes, railroad wagons and wind generators, chemical and petrochemical products, containers and goods from the automotive industry are transported. The intermodal connections benefit from Hungary's development into an important location for the automotive industry with all upstream and downstream logistics services.
