"Restructuring not at the expense of Bremen"
Bremen raises questions about merger plans in the German container business
In a financial statement, HHLA announced "open-ended talks" with Eurokai and the BLG Logistics Group on closer cooperation in the container business in the German Bight.
According to reports, there have already been preliminary political discussions with state governments regarding a possible HHLA participation in Eurogate. The Bremische Hafenvertretung e.V. (BHV) is not taking note of this development without reservations. "A merger of this kind to form "Deutsche Bucht AG" could have a considerable impact on the three German container ports in Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven," says Christoph Bruns, member of the board of Bremische Hafenvertretung. "Against this background, BHV has so far missed the necessary transparent political discussion about the expected effects on the Bremerhaven location and thus on Bremen's port and logistics industry as a whole."
In the opinion of BHV's Executive Board, the following questions in particular need to be answered:
Will BLG continue to hold its 50 percent stake in Eurogate and will the change of ownership take place exclusively on the Hamburg side?
Are there plans to sell BLG's shares in Eurogate to HHLA?
If yes:
How will it be ensured in the long term that Bremen's influence on the location decision of a company dominated by Hamburg in the future is guaranteed?
How is it ensured that Bremerhaven remains competitive when it comes to necessary investment decisions on superstructure (CT terminal, autonomous unloading processes, digitalization)?
How will it be ensured that the strict restructuring program publicly announced by Eurogate is not predominantly to the detriment of the interests of the state of Bremen as a business location?
How will the political influence of Bremen's state government on this existentially important part of port policy be safeguarded?
How can it be avoided that the current capacity reserves at JadeWeserPort (CTW) are filled at the expense of Bremerhaven?
Are there plans to unite the port authorities of the federal states of Hamburg, Bremen and Lower Saxony in the area of container handling in order to achieve competitive neutrality?
How do you assess the antitrust review of a merger for German container handling?
