Largest container ship in the world
A first call here too: HMM Algeciras arrives in Antwerp
The HMM Algeciras has arrived in the Belgian port of Antwerp on its maiden voyage to Europe. The world's newest and largest container ship will load and unload containers at PSA's Noordzee Terminal. On Saturday, June 13, at 5:30 a.m., the ship, which departed from Yantian (China) for Europe, will continue its journey to London.
With a length of 400 meters and a width of 61 meters, the HMM Algeciras can carry a total of 23,964 TEU (20-foot containers) and has 23 crew members. The Korean ship was delivered by Daewoo Shipping & Marine Engineering's Okpo shipyard on April 24.
Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO Port of Antwerp: "We at the Port of Antwerp are resilient and were 100% operational even during the pandemic. Despite the impact of the coronavirus crisis on our figures, we remain confident about the future. We are delighted to welcome HMM Algeciras. This proves that our port can also receive the largest container ships and highlights Antwerp's good starting position for further capacity expansion. It is our ambition to continue to grow sustainably as a port and to always have our finger firmly on the pulse of the global economy."
Jae-hoon Bae, President and CEO of HMM: "Last April was very significant for HMM due to two historic events. One was the completion of our rebranding process with the launch of our official company name 'HMM'. The other was the delivery of the HMM Algeciras, the world's largest 24K class container ship. The first arrival of the HMM Algeciras in Europe and the first call at the port of Antwerp has enormous symbolic significance. I am convinced that ships of the 24K class will help to strengthen the mutual partnership between the port of Antwerp and HMM".
Annick De Ridder, Port Senator: "Our port continues to successfully promote sustainable growth and the arrival of the world's largest container ship, the HMM Algeciras, is a great confirmation of this. It is an incentive that encourages us to continue building the port of tomorrow today. This is the only way that global players will continue to choose our city as their gateway to Europe in the future.
