Corridor of the New Silk Road
5,000 sea container units mark milestone in Sassnitz-Mukran
Since the end of March, Mukran Port Terminals GmbH has been operating a fixed sea route as part of the New Silk Road between Asia and Europe in cooperation with DBO Bahnoperator GmbH under the "flag" Baltic Sea Bridge. Following the announcement in June of an increase in frequency and the deployment of a larger ship due to capacity utilization, the next milestone for the still young corridor on the New Silk Road has now been reached. The MS Milady is currently on its way to Baltiysk (Kaliningrad region) with its 5000th container unit (TEU).
"The market for goods transportation is highly competitive in light of the global impact of the coronavirus pandemic. This makes the shipment of the five thousandth container unit all the more proof that we have taken the right path with our decisions and business focus. It also demonstrates the efficiency of the modern multifunctional port of Mukran Port in the Asia-Northern Europe corridor. The continuous flow of goods to and from China also speaks of trusting and reliable business relationships along the route on the New Silk Road," says Harm Sievers, Managing Director of Mukran Port Terminals GmbH.
Christian Pegel, Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalization of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, sees this as confirmation of the advantages of the state's excellent geographical location: "For several years, the port and the Ministry of Energy have intensively pursued the connection of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Russian side as a partner port in rail transport on the New Silk Road. It is great to see that these efforts are not only bearing fruit, but that a rapid development has been initiated with the five thousandth container."
"Within six months, the Mukran - Baltiysk connection has developed excellently and is impressing with consistently high booking figures and capacity utilization. We congratulate Mukran Port on transporting the five thousandth container unit on this new Silk Road route and look forward to seeing how quickly we can reach the ten thousand mark," says Arne Ehlers, Managing Director of BREB, the shipping company that handles the charter process for Baltic Sea Bridge.
