duisport grows despite corona pandemic

Container traffic at Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) is slightly higher than in the previous year. At the end of the first half of the year, duisport was still slightly below the previous year's figures. Due to the dynamic developments in the third quarter, it was possible to compensate for declines in the first half of the year.

duisport's goods traffic in the TEU segment is now two percent above the previous year's figure. Operations at the Port of Duisburg are running at 100 percent despite the coronavirus crisis. The company was prepared for the increased volume of goods transported by rail: With additionally mobilized storage space and rapid solutions for onward transport, the most important logistics hub in Europe is functioning even in times of crisis.

At the same time, new market opportunities were exploited: In April, the rail service was expanded to include additional Chinese partner destinations. According to the company, around a third of the total trade volume between Europe and China is now transported by freight train via the Duisburg logistics hub. "The volume of traffic via the New Silk Road has almost doubled compared to the previous year and already accounts for almost eight percent of the duisport Group's total container throughput," says Erich Staake. "Maritime goods traffic with China is also showing pleasing growth rates."

Total goods throughput in the current year is expected to be around four to five percent below the previous year's figure due to the sharp decline in coal transportation and a weak steel business.
