Stena Line ships 165-ton crane

On December 29, 2020, the Stena Germanica set sail from Kiel with a 165-tonne crawler crane on board Gothenburg. Flexible ships, special equipment and expertise are behind the project.

The crawler crane, which Stena Line shipped to Sweden as a project load shortly before the end of the year, can be up to 125 meters high, depending on the version. Due to its size, the construction machine was dismantled into 27 components and delivered to Kiel from its various production sites on nine trucks over a period of just under two weeks. Once in port, half a dozen dock workers reloaded the crane's components onto seven of Stena Line's own tractor units, each of which can carry up to 45 tons and bring them on board.

"Project loads like this require the utmost care, planning and efficient project management. When, as here, all the cogs mesh together, it takes just four weeks to transport such a huge crane across Europe from the factory floor to the customer's door. Our colleagues from the Shipping Logistics department have the experience and expertise to efficiently plan even such unusual project requests. Fortunately, oversizes, heavy loads and exceeding loading dimensions are no problem on our ships," commented Katrin Verner, Freight Commercial Manager Stena Line, on the transport project.
