The press conference that heralded the start of the trade fair featured a high-profile line-up: Kitack Lim (Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization), Esben Poulsson (Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping), Frank Starke (Global Product Manager Medium Speed Engines at engine manufacturer Caterpillar) and Bernd Aufderheide (CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH). The debate focused on the limit value of 0.5 percent sulphur content in ship fuel that will apply from January 1, 2020 and the goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions from global shipping by 2050. Manufacturers and conferences will provide visitors with answers to the resulting questions until September 7. Bernd Aufderheide emphasized the importance of SMM as a platform for the interdisciplinary and international exchange of decision-makers and experts and named digitalization and green shipping as two of the core topics at SMM 2018. The stricter limits mean enormous investments in scrubbers and other filter technologies for shipowners, as well as in alternative drive technologies in the medium term.
