Port of Riesa: expansion plans approved
The export-oriented domestic economy needs efficient infrastructure. The Logistics Network Central Germany therefore supports the expansion plans at the port of Riesa. The trimodal container terminal already handles more than 40,000 TEU (standard containers) per year and has reached its capacity limit. Numerous industrial and commercial companies would benefit from a new port terminal, reaching global sales markets via regular train and barge departures from Riesa.
Despite two consecutive years of low water levels in 2017 and 2018, record results were achieved in Riesa in both years, demonstrating the importance of the goods handling location. At around 43,500 TEU, the port of Riesa handled more containers in 2018 than ever before. The trimodal connection made it possible to compensate for the low water levels. Even at average water levels, even more transportation by water would be possible.
The enormous importance of German inland waterway transport has also been recognized by the Federal Ministry of Transport, which is currently working on a master plan to be presented in May. This is because inland shipping can also make an important contribution to achieving the climate targets that have been set, provided that the necessary infrastructure is created.
The port of Riesa could also take on additional capacity following its expansion and score points with its trimodal transport services. Freight trains depart daily from the site for the port of Hamburg, from where destinations all over the world can be reached. With the new terminal, these trains could also be loaded faster and more effectively.
