Dortmund, 03.08.2016 - Around 1,338,000 tons of goods were handled at the Port of Dortmund in the first half of the year - 18% more than planned. Last year, 1,438,000 tons were handled by the middle of the year. In comparison, the handling of goods by ship, including loaded containers, fell by seven percent or 100,000 tons in the first half of 2016. "The handling figures for the first half of 2016 exceed our target figures. That is a positive result. Nevertheless, we had expected a decline in throughput compared to the previous half-year. On the one hand, last year's results were particularly satisfactory. Ship cargo throughput including loaded containers for 2015 is our second-best result since the global economic crisis of 2008/2009. Secondly, the Port of Dortmund, like all other ports, has not been spared from the general steel crisis. Accordingly, we can be satisfied," says Uwe Büscher, CEO of Dortmunder Hafen AG.

Like last year, loaded containers are at the top of the goods groups. A total of 417,000 tons were handled in loaded containers in the Port of Dortmund from January to June 2016 inclusive - that is 12% or 56,100 tons less than in the first half of 2015. The following goods groups recorded growth from January to June 2016: Mineral oils by 15 percent or 38,100 tons, imported coal by 6 percent or 3,200 tons and building materials by 5 percent or 11,900 tons. The general steel crisis and the closure of Hoesch Spundwand und Profil GmbH were the main reasons for the declines in the scrap, -12% or -21,700 tons, and iron and steel, -36% or -62,000 tons. red
