Port of Antwerp secures supply chains
The port of Antwerp remains fully operational. This was confirmed by the Port Authority's Covid-19 task force at its second meeting on March 26. With the exception of previously announced disruptions in traffic with China, there have been no significant declines in ship movements in Antwerp.
The task force has since been strengthened with new members, and further priorities have been defined - in particular the "green lane" for truck traffic, which will help to ensure that the countries continue to be supplied efficiently. The Port of Antwerp's Covid-19 task force consists of representatives from all key areas of the port. Its task is to monitor daily operations and identify additional measures that need to be taken. A second location has also been temporarily set up for the Antwerp Coordination Center (ACC), which is responsible for coordinating shipping. This means that staff can be better distributed and the ACC remains 100% operational.
Due to the decline in production and demand in many branches of industry, the exchange of goods and raw materials is slowing down, resulting in backlogs. Both in the port and in the hinterland, there are increasing bottlenecks in terms of storage capacity, tank farms and parking spaces for vehicles. Alternatives are already being sought to compensate for these shortages.
All internal EU borders have been closed to passenger traffic. Only people from systemically important areas can now cross the borders. Special "green lanes" have been provided for freight traffic, a kind of "fast lane" for truck traffic.
