The port of Antwerp is on course for its sixth record year in a row thanks to a further increase in handling figures.

Total throughput after nine months was 177,026,550 tons, an increase of six percent compared to the same period last year. Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Antwerp Port Authority: "2018 is already a top year for our port. Not only because of the record figures that we are once again able to present, but also because of the wave of investments in recent months. The fact that major chemical companies such as Borealis, Ineos, Nippon, Sea-Mol and Oiltanking/AGT are choosing Antwerp confirms and consolidates our attractiveness as Europe's largest chemical cluster. The importance of these investments, which total around two billion euros, cannot be emphasized often enough. "

Imports and exports grew in all trade lanes, with the only exception being exports to Central America, which fell slightly. With growth of 12.4%, transshipment to Europe, the most important economic region, increased the most. Cargo handling for North America rose by 8.2% and for Asia by 2.2%. Breakbulk throughput achieved slight growth again overall in the first nine months of 2018, recovering somewhat after a period of negative figures. RoRo freight increased by 5.6% overall.
