New offshore supply vessel for Rhenus

Rhenus Offshore Logistics put a supply vessel with extended functions into operation on January 1 in cooperation with A1 Offshore Solutions. The ship is being used by the client, TenneT, from the base port of Emden for supply trips to offshore platforms and to inspect and repair structures and submarine cables.

The "Connector Express", built in 2002, was converted for its new deployment from October to December 2018 at the Fayard shipyard in Odense, Denmark, and equipped with a living module for up to 40 technicians. The ship also has 700 square meters of free deck space, a 26-AHC crane with a maximum lifting capacity of 26 tons and a cargo rail crane with a maximum lifting capacity of ten tons.

The "Connector Express" can be equipped with two submersible robots at any time for the inspection and repair of submarine cables and offshore structures under the surface. It also has a drone platform, a sonar device for exploring the seabed and an ultra-short baseline underwater navigation system. The main area of operation currently includes six TenneT-operated transformer platforms in German waters, which need to be supplied with food and spare parts. Three more platforms are expected to be added in 2019.

"Thanks to our unconventional approach to the bidding structure and the associated broad knowledge of our customer's needs, we were able to prevail over many competitors for the project and would like to thank TenneT Offshore for its confidence in the concept we presented," said Moritz Kukel, Head of Chartering & Marine Asset Management at Rhenus Offshore Logistics. "We have found the right partner for implementing such a large-scale project in A1 Offshore Solutions." Rhenus has chartered the "Connector Express" on a long-term basis and other similarly structured projects are being planned.
