Additional capacities
Three new container gantry cranes for the Port of Hamburg
Three new container gantry cranes for Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG's (HHLA) Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) arrived in Hamburg on November 5. HHLA is thus creating additional capacity for handling particularly large container ships.
The three ultra-modern container gantry cranes have reached their temporary berth at Athabaskakai after a journey of almost eight weeks on board the special ship "Zhen Hua 27". There they will be prepared for the complex unloading process before the "Zhen Hua 27" is moved to its final location at berth 6 in Waltershofer Hafen.
Replacement for three smaller units
The gantry cranes from the manufacturer ZPMC will replace three smaller units at CTB that have already been dismantled. HHLA then expects two more large container gantry cranes of the same design in the first quarter of 2020. Following the gradual commissioning of the new handling equipment, HHLA will have an additional mega-ship berth at Burchardkai.
"By investing in five new container gantry cranes and creating another mega-ship berth, we are offering our shipping company customers additional capacity and greater flexibility in handling particularly large container ships with a transport capacity of more than 23,000 standard containers," says HHLA Executive Board member Jens Hansen.
Last year, the number of calls at the Port of Hamburg by large container ships with a capacity of 18,000 TEU to 22,000 TEU rose by 47 percent to 150 calls. This trend is continuing: In the first half of 2019, the number grew again by almost 40 percent.
