New Silk Road
Mukran Port Terminals expands activities on the New Silk Road
With immediate effect, Mukran Port Terminals and Bahn Operator GmbH are jointly offering a fixed sea route as part of the New Silk Road between Asia and Europe under the "flag" Baltic Sea Bridge.
The container ship "SVS Vega" will operate a regular liner service between Sassnitz and Baltiysk (Kaliningrad region). The first cargo will be a train bound for China with a total of 50 containers. In the middle of the week, the ship will return from China with another train, also carrying 50 containers for Western and Northern Europe. Both trains are carrying important industrial goods.
Harm Sievers, Managing Director of Mukran Port Terminals, explains the importance of the connection: "After a total of four successful test runs, we have decided on a regular connection in order to offer a long-term, efficient option in the Baltic Sea region. This not only connects the New Silk Road to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the nearby Baltic region, but also opens up a significantly larger catchment area in Western and Northern Europe. We are planning to connect the ports of Malmö (CMP) and Karlshamm in Sweden in the near future. The Baltic Sea Bridge also accepts cargo in short sea traffic away from the Silk Road, so that containers from Scandinavia and Russia can be fed into the network between the countries. That's why we opted for the 'SVS Vega' as a high-performance container ship right from the start."
The company Bahn Operator is responsible for capacity utilization on the Silk Road route. Its Managing Director Marcel Stein emphasizes the importance of Port Mukran: "The geographical location in the Baltic Sea region is a prerequisite for us to connect the important industrial centers of Western and Northern Europe directly with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region." Other partners are the shipping company BREB, Eisenbahngesellschaft Potsdam mbH (EGP) and the association UTLC ERA Eurasian Rail Alliance.
