Environmental management at Germany's only deep-water container port, JadeWeserPort Wilhelmshaven, was PERS-certified for the third time after 2015 and 2018.

PERS stands for Port Environmental Review System, an instrument for analyzing and monitoring environmental management, especially in ports. The certificate was issued by the international organization EcoPorts, based in Brussels, which has set certain requirements for the environmental management of JadeWeserPort. These include organizational and legal aspects as well as structural adjustments to existing port infrastructure to generate more efficient logistics chains.

Current environmental report as a basis
The focus is on the measures taken to protect the environment and reduce the environmental impact of the port. The application for renewed PERS certification is based on the current environmental report of the JadeWeserPort-Realisierungsgesellschaft (JWPR). For the first time, the upcoming electrification of the sidings and the siding group at JadeWeserPort was integrated into the report.

Modernization of rail transport
The port's connection to the public rail network is being modernized and the Oldenburg - Wilhelmshaven line is to be electrified by 2022. In order to optimize the transition from the public to the port's own rail network, the approximately four-kilometre-long siding and the entire siding group with its 16 tracks will also be electrified. This will lay the foundation for the use of electric traction vehicles instead of diesel-powered vehicles and thus lower-emission technology. Holger Banik, Managing Director of JWPR and Niedersachsen Ports: "We are delighted to have received PERS certification for the third time and to have received international recognition for our measures for sustainable management and the development of the port. Our goal is to consistently and continuously expand the environmental management system in the coming years."
