Hapag-Lloyd acquires stake in JadeWeserPort

Hapag-Lloyd has announced its intention to acquire a 30 percent stake in Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven (CTW) and a 50 percent stake in Rail Terminal Wilhelmshaven (RTW) at JadeWeserPort.

Terminal operator Eurogate continues to hold the remaining shares. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The transaction is expected to be completed in a few months, subject to antitrust approval. According to NDR, Hapag-Lloyd is reportedly planning to send ships to Wilhelmshaven regularly in future.

With 250 container ships and a total transport capacity of 1.8 million TEU, Hapag-Lloyd is one of the largest shipping companies in the world. The company employs around 13,400 people in 130 countries. With 121 liner services, Hapag-Lloyd provides connections between more than 600 ports on all continents.

JadeWeserPort
The first initiatives to build a deep-water container port on the Jade were launched in 1993 by the Wilhelmshavener Hafenwirtschafts-Vereinigung (WHV). This was followed by an analysis of potential and a feasibility study in 1998 and 2000. n April 2006, the EUROGATE Group was awarded the contract to operate the JadeWeserPort. In January 2011, the first construction phase of the quay, 1,000 meters in length, was handed over to the operator EUROGATE. The port went into trial operation in April 2012. The JadeWeserPort was officially opened on September 21, 2012.
