HMM Algeciras
First call: World's largest container ship in Hamburg
On Sunday, June 7, the "HMM Algeciras", the new flagship of the South Korean liner shipping company HMM (formerly Hyundai Merchant Marine), headed for the Port of Hamburg on its first voyage. With a capacity of 23,964 20-foot standard containers, the "HMM Algeciras" is the largest container ship in the world, according to the shipping company.
Handling took place in Hamburg at the HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB). A total of 13,600 TEU (20-foot standard containers) were unloaded and loaded.
The container giant was built by the South Korean shipyard group Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) as the first ship in a new twelve-ship series and was recently delivered to HMM. With its slot capacity, the container ship surpasses the previous record holder of the shipping company MSC, which deploys container ships with a capacity of 23,756 TEU.
With a ship length of 400 meters and a width of 61 meters, the "HMM ALgeciras" and its 11 sister ships belong to the "Megamax-24" group of container ships. These particularly large ships can stow 24 containers crosswise in 24 rows.
The container giant will be deployed on the Asia-Europe voyage. "We are delighted that the 'HMM Algeciras' was able to complete its first voyage to Hamburg without any problems in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. Together, everyone involved in Hamburg contributed to the safe and efficient handling of this exceptionally large ship," says Jens Meier, CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority.
