Dematic expands its service portfolio

System inspections using drone technology

Dematic is offering its customers a visual inspection service for intralogistics systems: In future, the intralogistics specialist will enable them to carry out regular safety checks and visual inspections with the help of drones. This will reduce the need for service technicians to operate at great heights with complex safety equipment and precautions. With Dematic Drone Inspection Services, as the customer service provided is called, the time and effort required for the prescribed inspections of automated storage systems, such as storage and retrieval machines, stored goods and buildings, can be greatly reduced without any loss of quality.

"Safety in the workplace is always our top priority," says René Sickler, Senior Director of Dematic Services GmbH. "That's why all safety-relevant systems and components must be inspected regularly and checked for any defects. With our new Dematic Drone Inspection Services, systems will be down for shorter and more planned periods in future. They can also be put back into operation more quickly after the drone check. And: everything is comparatively risk-free for the service personnel."

In order to implement this innovative approach efficiently and operate across all brands, project management was handed over to the central Technology & Innovation department of the parent company, KION Group AG. Sickler emphasizes: "By pooling our expertise with KION, we have solved the technical, organizational and regulatory challenges and quickly turned them into a new type of service. This offers our customers real added value." Dematic Drone Inspection Services have been approved by the German Federal Aviation Authority and are now available as a service from Dematic in Central Europe. In the future, this service will also be rolled out globally.

Long system downtimes are avoided

To date, visual inspections have mostly been carried out by service technicians with extensive safety equipment for use at height. This requires elaborate precautions - sometimes even scaffolding has to be erected. This in turn results in long downtimes for the systems and high costs. These disadvantages can be significantly reduced by using Dematic Drone Inspection Services.

The time required for each drone inspection is only around 30 percent compared to an inspection carried out by climbers. The risk of an accident resulting in personal injury is even largely eliminated. Other service areas where the use of drones offers advantages include interim inspections, monitoring congestion situations, facility management and situation analysis in emergencies such as accidents.

The aircraft, which are equipped with high-resolution cameras and LED spotlights, are controlled by trained and appropriately licensed Dematic service staff. The images and videos recorded during the flight can be analyzed both in real time and afterwards. Thanks to the smooth flight characteristics and high image resolution, even the smallest details such as inspection stickers on the column head can be captured and analyzed. Another advantage is that the analysis can also be carried out remotely. In particularly difficult cases, specialists who are not on site can be called in. In addition, the images generated can be used to create long-term documentation of all inspections over the entire service life of the intralogistics systems.

The images are processed in strict compliance with data protection laws and regulations by blurring or removing relevant objects from the photos. Access to data storage is also restricted and only possible with clear confidentiality agreements.

"The use of the Dematic Drone Inspection Service gives customers a tangible competitive advantage," Sickler is convinced. The global market launch of the innovative service technology is set to take place soon. At the same time, the company is working on opening up new fields of application for the drone: For example, Dematic drones could also fly autonomously in the future and use artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze the recorded image and video material at the same time.
