Truck racing series starts the 2020 racing season digitally

May 24 will go down as a special date in the annals of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship, as the series kicked off on a virtual race track for the first time in its history. All previous racing events had been canceled due to the coronavirus crisis. Organizer ETRC, fans, drivers and Goodyear as the exclusive tire partner of the series were all the more pleased about the start of the (digital) season.

Youngster Téo Calvet is also happy to take on the challenges on the digital race track: "Until we meet on a real grid, the ETRC Digital Racing Challenge is a great way to keep the competitive spirit alive. My goal for the real 2020 racing season is to finish in the top 10 and fight for victory in the Grammer Cup," explains the 19-year-old driver from Team BUGGYRA RACING.

On May 24, the truck drivers competed in the first race of the ETRC Digital Racing Challenge, which consists of a series of eight events on the internet. The first encounter took place on the virtual race track of the Hungaroring - where the 2020 season opener would have actually been held on the last weekend of April. Local hero Norbert Kiss won both races in the first round. Up-and-coming star Téo Calvet finished the first race in fourth place and led the second race until Kiss took his second win of the day after a great battle with Calvet. It will be interesting to see how Calvet performs in the upcoming second race of the European Truck Racing Championship Digital Series on June 7 at the legendary race track in Misano, Italy.

As in the "real" races, the drivers perform at their best when they drive their virtual race trucks from the driving simulator. Their trucks wear the 2020 team livery and drive on Goodyear tires. The Assetto Corsa gaming platform also allows them to make personal modifications to their trucks.

"As the exclusive tire partner of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship, we are looking forward to the racing series in virtual space. It brings the thrill of the race track into the living rooms of drivers, teams and fans around the world," said Maciej Szymanski, Director Marketing Commercial Tires Europe at Goodyear. "And we are well prepared for the start of the 2020 FIA European Truck Racing Championship season in Most in August. New this year are the iconic Goodyear stickers on the sidewall of the tires. The tires thus resemble earlier Formula 1 tires, on which no fewer than 368 Grand Prix were won."

"I got my first win on Goodyear tires when I was just 16 years old - they've been with me since my first day of truck racing! Driving on such a top product is a dream come true for any racer. They are extremely robust and therefore perfect for cornering and high speeds," adds Calvet.

Until the start of the official truck races, the ETRC Digital Racing Challenge will be broadcast worldwide via 2h live streams on the ETRC's social media. The virtual races will be monitored by an official race director and commented on by experts. The second round is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, 2020. The first race on a real race track will take place on August 29 and 30, 2020 in Most, Czech Republic.
