Together with Mercedes-Benz Trucks and LC3 Trasporti, the Inter IKEA Group is focusing on battery-electric trucks and driving forward the decarbonization of road freight transport in Italy.

The Inter IKEA Group is launching its first fully electrified heavy-duty road freight transport project in Italy. Together with Mercedes-Benz Trucks and logistics partner LC3 Trasporti, the logistics activities are to be gradually converted to battery-electric trucks. The aim is to significantly lower CO₂ emissions, reduce noise and meet the European requirements for the decarbonization of mobility at an early stage.

The project officially begins in October and is considered a milestone for the electrification of IKEA's long-distance transportation in Italy. Starting with two e-trucks already in use, the fleet will be expanded to over ten Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 vehicles by the third quarter of 2026. The vehicles will be used to transport containers between the ports of Genoa and La Spezia and to supply distribution centers and stores in northern Italy.

More than 1.2 million kilometers CO₂-free

In full operation, more than 1.2 million kilometers are to be covered locally CO₂-free every year. In addition to reducing emissions, the electric trucks also contribute to lower noise pollution, especially during night-time deliveries in urban areas. "This is an ambitious project that aims to significantly reduce our ecological footprint in Italian freight transport. Thanks to the new partnership between the three companies, we can jointly develop the optimal configuration and find solutions that reduce overall costs while contributing to a cleaner and quieter environment," says Ewelina Taylor, Global Transport Manager at Inter IKEA Group.

"This project marks a turning point for LC3 Trasporti. The introduction of the eActros 600 in partnership with IKEA and Daimler Truck Italia shows that collaboration along the entire supply chain is the only realistic driver for change," adds Michele Ambrogi, Commercial Director of LC3 Trasporti. Maurizio Pompei, CEO Daimler Truck Italia, adds: "This is an exemplary example of how technological innovation can be very well reconciled with environmental sustainability and operational efficiency."
