Networked trailers

Research project on the autonomous transportation of the future

The autonomous transport of the future includes an autonomous trailer. That is why the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is funding a three-year research project to investigate the requirements for autonomous trailers. BPW is leading the consortium, which includes scientific institutes, sensor technology and IT specialists.

Under the leadership of BPW, a working group of scientists, transport and logistics experts and vehicle manufacturers is researching the autonomous trailer of the future. The "IdenT" research project stands for "Identification of dynamic and safety-relevant trailer conditions for automated trucks".

The vision of a fully automated and autonomous truck makes economic and ecological sense, as it could be used around the clock. Provided that the vehicle is able to take over the driver's tasks. Networked trailers play a key role in autonomous driving: they are designed to permanently compare data collected by sensors, for example on the trailer's surroundings, with a 'digital twin' - a field of innovation that BPW is already using in practice today. BPW acts as a system integrator, defining the concept and providing a measurement and development platform for the partners: A test vehicle is to test the system in real driving conditions. The research project will also provide concrete findings for semi-autonomous intermediate stages.
