Machine-to-machine transaction
Pilot project for self-paying trucks
Trucks that communicate independently with other machines and carry out legally binding transactions - this vision of the future is getting closer. With the Truck-ID and the associated Truck Wallet, experts from Daimler Trucks have now created the necessary conditions for this as part of a pilot project.
Together with partners, the developers have successfully carried out an automatic payment process at an electric charging station in an initial use case. The principle: trucks can use the Truck ID to identify themselves to other machines like a built-in ID card and clearly sign transactions. The Truck Wallet acts as a platform technology and central user program for all applications that access the Truck ID and use it for different purposes. Like a real wallet, the Truck Wallet can contain money for payment transactions as well as various cards such as fuel or customer cards - but only in digital form.
Truck ID and Truck Wallet - both currently still prototypes - are stored as encrypted software programs in a cryptographic processor. The processor is part of the Truck Data Center, the central telematics control unit of the new Mercedes-Benz Actros.
Dr. Helge Königs, Project Manager Truck Wallet at Daimler Trucks: "With Truck-ID and Truck Wallet, we have created the basis for autonomous interactions between trucks and other machines - a technological milestone. Our aim is to turn trucks into independent players in a wide range of applications in the future. Drivers will be able to concentrate more on their actual tasks and transport companies will benefit from a significant reduction in administrative work and safer processes. For example, the common fuel card fraud perpetrated by criminals by copying fuel cards and spying on PIN numbers is practically no longer possible in this form. Our prototypes also show the direction that further development can take with regard to highly automated trucks."
