500th Mercedes-Benz Actros SLT heavy-duty tractor unit handed over to TSB Transport-Service Beitinger
Heavy-duty tractor units such as the Mercedes-Benz Actros SLT are used to transport oversized and heavy components or machinery. The 500th Mercedes-Benz SLT tractor unit based on the current Actros was handed over to TSB Transport-Service Beitinger in Gundelfingen, Swabia.
TSB Managing Director Edwin Beitinger said at the handover: "In over 30 years of carrying out heavy haulage, absolute flexibility is at the top of our quality standards. For the 4-axle tractor units, we therefore rely on the Actros SLT, which meets all the requirements we place on a tractor unit." Andreas Schmid, Head of Mercedes-Benz Truck Sales South, added: "Anyone working in the field of heavy-duty transportation needs high-tech equipment and uncompromising reliability, as delivered by the top model in the Actros series. The 500th anniversary SLT cements the long-standing relationship between our partner, Beitinger, and the Mercedes-Benz Neu-Ulm branch."
The core competencies of Transport-Service Beitinger lie in the transportation of oversized and heavy goods, as well as full loads of facades and other sensitive goods that require proper and careful handling. The heavy-duty tractor unit handed over is a Mercedes-Benz Actros 4163 LS SLT. It is powered by the OM 473 R6 engine with a displacement of 15.6 liters. It offers an output of 625 hp with a torque of 3000 Nm. The G 280 transmission is equipped with a turbo retarder clutch (TRK) to transfer the transport loads of up to 250 tons to the road. The OM 473's supercharged decompression engine brake is of particular importance in heavy-duty transport, with an output of up to 646 hp (475 kW). The wear-free braking power together with the TRK (primary retarder) is 980 hp.
A photovoltaic system is installed on the roof of the SLT. This compensates for the current power consumption of electrical consumers such as the air conditioning system when the vehicle is stationary, without the engine having to be started. This saves fuel and thus reduces the burden on the environment by reducing CO² emissions. The SLT has a triple rear axle package, which includes the steerable leading axle and the two drive axles. The front axle, which is always steel-sprung, is available with a load capacity of either eight tons or nine tons. The air-sprung leading axle with a load capacity of up to eight tons is steered electrohydraulically. The two rear axles of the Actros SLT have a load capacity of 13.4 tons and are equipped as standard with the four-bellows air suspension familiar from the Actros. The rear cooling tower contains special heavy-duty technology: the system combines the cooling of the engine and turbo retarder clutch in a single water circuit. In the SLT, the cooling system is supplemented by an additional water cooler plus hydraulically driven fan. This increases the cooling capacity and therefore the performance of the SLT. Conversely, thanks to the shared circuit, the engine cooler is also used in braking mode.
