High expectations
First Rolande CNG/LNG filling station opened in Germany
On July 8, Rolande B.V.'s first CNG/LNG filling station in Germany opened on Nicolaus-Otto-Straße in Ulm. This new futuristically designed filling station replaces the first portable LNG filling station in Germany, just a stone's throw away, which had previously been used by the Iveco test department and the many field test vehicles to supply several million test kilometers.
The timing could not be better, as the toll exemption for LNG and CNG-powered trucks over 7.5 tons is now a done deal until 31 December 2023. The issue of investment security now applies to customers of the gas-powered IVECO S-WAY NP as well as to the operators of filling stations and their suppliers.
As one of the pioneers, Rolande introduced (bio)-LNG and CNG+ for transport vehicles in Dutch and European road freight transport back in 2010. Today, Rolande is one of the largest LNG network operators in the Netherlands and is now also setting up a supply structure for LNG and CNG fuel in Germany. The futuristic-looking filling station with its curved roofs and tall, slim LNG tank was opened by Rolande CEO Jolon van der Schuit, Iveco Magirus AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing Christian Sulser and the Lord Mayor of Ulm, Gunter Czisch.
Pioneering model for success
The facility is a public 24/7 self-service filling station with two LNG dispensers and two CNG dispensers. With a daily capacity of up to 150 vehicles and a spacious entrance and exit, the filling station is designed for heavy goods vehicles.
With an IvecoS-WAY NP or an Iveco Stralis NP, the refueling process at this new filling station takes no longer than with a diesel truck. The only difference is that drivers must always wear their personal protective equipment (PPE) when refueling. After refueling, the IVECO S-WAY NP has a range of up to 1,600 kilometers.
There are currently 25 LNG filling stations at busy junctions in Germany. There are now 250 LNG filling stations across Europe. By the end of 2020, 70 LNG filling stations are expected to be in operation in Germany.
"The rapid establishment of an international network of LNG filling stations is absolutely essential for an increasingly comprehensive supply of LNG/bio-LNG and the associated greater attractiveness of LNG vehicles," says Christian Sulser, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Iveco Magirus AG. "The opening of the filling station in Ulm is another important step in this direction.
