Daimler's trucks and buses cover 7 million kilometers electrically

Daimler Trucks & Buses is celebrating another milestone on the way to electrifying its vehicle portfolio: Customers worldwide have already covered over seven million kilometers locallyCO2-neutral with battery-electric trucks and buses.

Positive customer feedback and findings from the intensive practical tests with Mercedes-Benz, FUSO and Freightliner e-trucks show that the electrification of road freight transport is already feasible today. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz electric city bus, the eCitaro, has been in use as a series vehicle in various European cities since 2018.

As part of its electrification strategy, Daimler Trucks plans to offer electric vehicles in all main sales regions by 2022: from the FUSO eCanter in the light-duty segment and the Freightliner eM2 in the medium-duty segment to the Mercedes-Benz eActros and the Freightliner eCascadia in the heavy-duty segment.

Martin Daum, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler Truck AG and Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG: "As one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in the world, we also aim to be an innovation and technology leader in alternative drive systems. For example, our locallyCO2-neutral eCitaro city bus has been in series production since 2018 and is electrifying public transport in many cities. With our electric trucks, we also want to offer our customers vehicles that are on a par with conventional trucks in terms of availability and performance. This was our motivation for putting e-trucks into customer hands at an early stage. Thanks to our global positioning, customers all over the world are testing different vehicle concepts in various practical applications. This represents a particular competitive advantage. Thanks to the close exchange with our customers and the many test kilometers covered, important findings have already been incorporated directly into the series development of our e-trucks for several years."

E-trucks with a star: the Mercedes-Benz eActros and eEconic

Mercedes-Benz Trucks was the first manufacturer worldwide to present a heavy-duty electric truck at the IAA 2016. With the all-electric eActros truck, Mercedes-Benz Trucks demonstrates that heavy-duty distribution transport for urban areas is already possible with zero local emissions. The eActros, with a range of around 200 km, has been proving itself as a locallyCO2-neutral alternative for urban distribution transport in a wide range of practical applications with various customers in Europe since 2018. Series production is scheduled to start in 2021.

The first practical deployments of the Mercedes-Benz eEconic low-floor truck, which was announced in 2020 and is based on the eActros, are planned for next year. The start of series production is planned for 2022. The eEconic is mainly used as a refuse collection vehicle in urban waste management operations, which is very well suited to battery-electric trucks due to the comparatively short and fixed routes of around 100 km with a very high proportion of stop-and-go driving.

Pioneer in light distribution transport: the electric FUSO eCanter in small series production

The lightweight FUSO eCanter celebrated its world premiere in September 2017 and is being delivered to numerous customers worldwide. The all-electric light truck from FUSO is the answer to public demand for locally emission-free trucks for light inner-city distribution transport. As part of a small series, more than 170 FUSO eCanter light trucks are already being used by numerous customers in Japan, the USA and Europe. Further handovers will follow successively. The 7.49-tonne truck's range of 100 kilometers reliably covers the needs of customers in inner-city distribution transport. With a fast charger, the charging time can be reduced to around one and a half hours. The eCanter is produced in Kawasaki, Japan and in Tramagal, Portugal.

Daimler Trucks North America: Customer trials with Freightliner eCascadia & eM2

In the USA, the heavy-duty eCascadia and the medium-duty eM2 celebrated their premiere in Portland in June 2018. Both e-trucks are currently undergoing practical tests with customers in the USA. The test fleet includes over 38 vehicles in a variety of applications, including regional and local distribution, food distribution and parcel delivery. In series production, they are expected to have a range of around 370 km (eM2) or up to 400 km (eCascadia). The planned start of series production of the eCascadia is mid-2022 and that of the Freightliner eM2 is the end of 2022.

The first and only electric bus developed and manufactured in Germany

With the all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro, Daimler Buses has been offering a locally emission-free city bus for environmentally friendly public transport in cities and metropolitan areas since 2018. The eCitaro is based on the Citaro city bus, which has proven itself thousands of times over. It is the first and only fully electric city bus developed and manufactured in Germany. The eCitaro impresses with its elegant design, its exemplary thermal management to minimize energy consumption and its friendly, functional passenger compartment. The city bus had its world premiere as a solo vehicle two years ago.
