Continental: Turning corners more safely with the digital assistant

Hanover, 09.08.2018 - Digital assistance systems are intended to increase road safety. Turning accidents between trucks and cyclists or pedestrians are not uncommon, especially in urban traffic, and calls for the mandatory installation of right-turn assist systems are becoming ever louder.

The assistance systems are designed to warn the driver if a pedestrian or cyclist is in the blind spot. Even though an EU-wide legal requirement is not expected for at least a few years, countries such as Germany are relying on the voluntary commitment of the automotive industry and the transport sector to improve road safety.

AI to better classify pedestrian behavior
Continental already offers radar-based systems for series development in original equipment or as a retrofit solution. At the IAA Commercial Vehicles (Continental: Hall 17, Stand B11/A06) this fall, interested parties can get an overview of the current developments during a visit to the Continental Innovation Truck. The technology company would like to add camera technology to its radar-based right-turn assistant in the future. In a further step, artificial intelligence will also help to better assess the behavior of pedestrians and cyclists.

The previously available radar-based system determines the position of road users and calculates the time until a possible collision. The addition of cameras to the radar system is intended to increase the accuracy and performance of the digital assistant. Among other things, the gesture recognition process will be used to detect approaching cyclists even earlier. In the third stage of development, the system will also use artificial intelligence to predict the movements of pedestrians and cyclists. mm
