DPD Germany optimizes parcel delivery with Zebra Technologies

DPD Germany's delivery drivers scan up to 1,000 parcels a day with the help of mobile devices from Zebra Technologies. The logistics specialist uses the TC77 all-in-one mobile computer for all data scans in local transport, enabling it to keep pace with demand and optimize its logistics.

DPD transports over 400 million parcels worldwide every year. The company's growth curve is steep and it needed a digital solution to further improve efficiency, productivity and transparency in parcel delivery. IBM - as DPD's supplier and Zebra Premier Solution Partner - managed the implementation of Zebra's mobile computers and the deployment of DPD's customized software, ensuring a smooth and rapid rollout.

"Selected for reliability and robustness"

"Our handheld devices are put through their paces because the drivers scan up to 1,000 parcels a day and the batteries have to be powerful enough to last the whole day - a smartphone can't do that," says Rudolf Pöcking, Project Manager at DPD Germany. "Zebra's mobile computers are our customer interface for pick-up and delivery, and we chose them for their reliability, robustness and long battery life."

App increases productivity

To increase driver productivity and transparency in parcel delivery, DPD developed an app for data capture using QR and barcode technology and installed it on around 14,000 devices. Drivers can add their own notes to a specific delivery, for example how many parcels they have delivered, whether parcels were damaged or where the parcels were left in the absence of the recipient. The delivery vehicles are equipped with Zebra charging stations.

"The secure attachment of handhelds in vehicles is a mandatory requirement, similar to navigation devices," says Jörg Heinz, TLS Client Management, IBM Germany. "Zebra has developed special mounts that meet this requirement and at the same time supply power to the handhelds. As part of our repair and replacement service, IBM not only manages the replacement of defective devices and batteries, but also the subsequent delivery of new devices and accessories."
