Jumbo backs Greenspan

The Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has realigned its e-commerce logistics with Greenplan, the intelligent route planning and optimization solution from EPG (Ehrhardt Partner Group).

Jumbo is one of the largest food retailers in the Netherlands and operates a delivery network for online retail in addition to its store business. More than 600 vehicles are on the road every day to deliver orders directly to end customers.

With the growth of e-commerce, the requirements for route planning also increased. Although established planning software was already in use in conjunction with a transport management system, there were regular deviations in delivery times. Adhering to the promised time windows required a great deal of manual effort in scheduling and had an increasing impact on customer satisfaction.

With this in mind, Jumbo opted for Greenplan as part of a selection process. The decisive factor was the solution's data-based approach. Instead of working with static travel times, Greenplan takes into account traffic patterns depending on the time of day and calculates routes based on real traffic patterns. This results in significantly more realistic timetables that are better aligned with the actual conditions on the road.

Adjustment to short-term events

In food e-commerce in particular, just a few minutes can often decide whether a delivery window is met or not. At the same time, traffic conditions can change considerably over the course of the day. Greenplan takes these dynamics into account during the planning stage and determines not only the optimal route, but also the most favorable start time for a tour. The solution also supports scheduling in reacting to new orders or operational disruptions at short notice.

"The collaboration between Jumbo and Greenplan was very focused and efficient throughout the entire project," explains Jan Leensen, Project Lead at Jumbo. "The fact that the right people were involved right from the start played a key role in ensuring that we were able to implement the introduction quickly and maintain the momentum throughout the entire project."

Fast commissioning, improved delivery reliability

Greenplan was implemented across Jumbo's entire Dutch delivery network within five months. This was made possible by the close cooperation between the specialist departments, IT and the Greenplan experts.

Significant improvements in operations became apparent shortly after the go-live. Delivery reliability increased noticeably and had a direct impact on customer satisfaction. At the same time, productivity increased by six percent. In addition, Jumbo was able to reduce the number of vehicles required and use existing resources more efficiently. The drivers also benefit from the more realistically planned routes. "Less time in traffic jams, more stable routes and more satisfied customers make a noticeable difference in day-to-day operations," says Frank Gerritsen, E-Commerce Lead at Jumbo.
