Hapag-Lloyd invests in East Africa

Hamburg, 21.08.2018 - Hapag-Lloyd continues to focus on the growing market in East Africa, launching its first dedicated service to East Africa in April with the East Africa Service (EAS). The weekly service runs from Jeddah to Mombasa and from there to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and then directly back to Jeddah.

Following the successful launch, the route is to be expanded in September. This means that Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Khor Fakkan, Jabal Ali, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam will be served on a weekly basis. This new EAS2 service will replace the existing EAS service and connect the Arabian Gulf and the west coast of India directly with East Africa. In addition, Hapag-Lloyd will fulfill transport orders to locations in the East African hinterland.

"I am delighted that our East Africa service to and from Kenya is developing so positively. After only four months of operation, we have significantly expanded our business as the overall utilization of the vessels far exceeded our expectations," said Dheeraj Bhatia, Managing Director Africa, Middle East and Indian Subcontinent of Hapag-Lloyd AG.

East Africa has recently recorded an annual growth rate of around six percent, with Kenya in particular seeing a significant rise in import and export figures. mm
