"Belt & Road" initiative
Port of Duisburg expands its position in China trade
Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) is strengthening its position in trade with China along the corridors of the "Belt & Road" initiative through investments and cooperation.
In the Great Stone special economic zone, a rail terminal including a logistics area is being built under the management of duisport, together with partners China Merchants China-Belarus, the Belarusian state railroad and the Swiss company Hupac. An agreement to this effect was signed in Minsk on July 2. At the beginning of 2018, duisport acquired a minority stake in the development company of the planned Great Stone industrial and logistics park near Minsk in Belarus, the largest in the world.
Bimodal terminal on 30 hectares
A bimodal terminal (30 hectares) with an initial maximum annual handling capacity of 180,000 standard containers (TEU) is to be built on 80 hectares of logistics land, with the option to increase capacity to up to 500,000 TEU. The remaining 50 hectares will be used for the establishment of logistics companies. Construction of the rail terminal is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2020, with commissioning planned for 2021.
Strengthening rail transportation between Germany and Poland
The company dpa Polska Intermodal was also founded in Minsk by the partners duisport, the Chinese and Polish logistics service providers China Merchants China-Belarus Commerce & Logistics Corporation and Erontrans, as well as Belintertrans, a subsidiary of the Belarusian state railroad. The company aims to promote the development, marketing and implementation of rail transportation between Poland and Germany. "I am delighted that we have succeeded in creating powerful international consortia for both projects," says duisport's CEO Erich Staake.
