Vollers Hamburg invests in terminal equipment
With the new eco reachstacker from Kalmar, Vollers can now empty containers weighing up to 32 tons directly.
Germans drink around 169 liters of coffee every year. Behind this figure lies a gigantic logistics operation: many hundreds of thousands of tons of green coffee have to be cleaned, sorted, packaged and handled. One of these service providers working in the background is the Vollers group of companies with 450 employees. It is one of the largest coffee logistics companies in Europe. Every year, 240,000 tons of coffee and cocoa are stored, picked, packed and handled at the Hamburg site. Around 2,000 containers are permanently stored on the company's 18-hectare site. Three Kalmar DRG450-65S5 reach stackers are used for storage and stacking work. Another large machine is stationed at the Bremen headquarters. The Kalmar Eco reachstacker procured in February 2023 is new. Special feature: the 55-degree tilting "tipping spreader" allows 20-, 30- and 40-foot containers weighing up to 32 tons to be tipped out.
Managing Director Marco Franz explains: "We are a full-service provider and work all year round. Our reach stackers stack the 20-foot containers five high. The new eco reachstacker can lift and move the containers and load coffee directly into trucks using the tipping spreader." Coffee and cocoa are sensitive goods. Gentle handling is the top priority. Customers call off their coffee quantities 24/7 via the digital Vollers CRM system "V-Interface" - hard work for the large forklift trucks. They perform around 2,500 - 3,000 operating hours per year and remain at Vollers for around 10 years. Managing Director Christopher Klüß explains: "Sustainability and total cost of ownership are very important to us. The new eco reachstacker from Kalmar consumes around five liters less than the existing machines, so the additional price quickly pays for itself and our ecological footprint is improved due to the lowerCO2 emissions. It is also considerably quieter, which our drivers like."
The next step is the digital upgrade with tablets. This means that drivers and reach stackers are connected to the ERP system in real time - quantities, quality and container locations are then consistently organized.
Eco reachstacker consumes 5 liters less per hour
The Kalmar Eco reachstacker offers a proven drive train consisting of the HVT transmission, which combines hydrostatic and mechanical components. This combination allows the use of more efficient engines with the same performance data, which leads to a reduction inCO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Fuel and emission reductions of up to 40 % are thus achieved. Low-speed precision and traction is possible thanks to the direct hydrostatic connection. The high-speed drive with an engaged, highly efficient mechanical drive offers three forward and two reverse gears.
The 80-tonne reachstacker is powered by a 235 kW Volvo engine. A special feature is the Dana-Rexroth transmission for efficient handling. Three operating modes allow the power to be adapted to the respective work requirements. The Bromma special spreader allows tilting by 55 degrees. It also offers a sideshift of +/- 800 millimetres.
The new EGO cab with electronically controlled air conditioning has very large windows that offer the driver perfect visibility from all angles. Thanks to clearly arranged and ergonomic instruments, levers, pedals, control panels, switches and displays, the driver has more precise control over the work process.
