Maritime economy: Five millionth ton transported from Cuxhaven to Immingham

Cuxhaven, 22.09.2017 - "RailRoCargo", the joint product of Cuxport, DFDS Germany and TRANSA Spedition, is celebrating a milestone: In September 2017, the five millionth tonne of freight was handled at the Cuxport terminal in Cuxhaven for onward transport to the UK.

The "RailRoCargo" cooperation has existed since 1982 and includes the pre-carriage of goods, mainly by rail, carried out by TRANSA, to Cuxhaven. At the Cuxport terminal, the goods are transferred from wagons to DFDS MAFI roll trailers in a covered area, which are then shipped to Immingham near Grimsby & Hull on the east coast of England by ro/ro ferry. There, DFDS takes over the storage and distribution of the freight by truck to the British recipients.

The main types of goods include steel, paper, wood and building materials. Wood products, for example in the form of flooring, are currently the segment with the strongest volume growth, with an increase of 97% compared to last year.

"The handling of project cargo, such as rail vehicles, is also possible at the terminal with the help of our port cranes with a lifting capacity of up to 100 tons," says Roland Schneider, Head of Business Development at Cuxport.

A wagon with 90 cubic meters or 60 tons of goods, depending on the type of load, corresponds to a loaded MAFI roll trailer or up to three truckloads. "The combination of rail transport and MAFI roll trailers in maritime transport avoids further pollution of the roads and the environment and at the same time achieves a high degree of economic efficiency," explains Kay-Uwe Müller-Gericke, Business Development Manager at TRANSA Spedition GmbH.

"With five ferry departures per week and direction, we offer a high departure frequency and loading capacity, enabling a fast flow of goods. Our customers particularly appreciate the needs-based availability of their goods stored at DFDS in the sales market," reports Joachim Wöhlkens, Sales & Marketing Manager Shipping Logistics at DFDS Germany in Cuxhaven. red
