Dual-fuel technology
Hydrogen tugboat for the port of Antwerp
The "Hydrotug" is to be the first of its kind: The port of Antwerp has commissioned the construction of a hydrogen-powered tugboat.
The tug is equipped with combustion engines powered by hydrogen in combination with diesel. The environmentally friendly tug is being built by Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB). The combination of this dual-fuel technology with a modern particulate filter and catalytic converter should ensure very low emission values for the Hydrotug. Construction of the tug will begin shortly, so that the Hydrotug is expected to be ready for use within two years.
Role of the port in the energy transition should not be underestimated
Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of the Port of Antwerp: "The role of the industrial port of Antwerp in the energy transition should not be underestimated. We are working on becoming a CO2-neutral port. Together with our partners, we are preparing for the future by continuously looking for innovative solutions and opportunities. With this world first, we want to further pave the way for alternative fuels such as hydrogen to realize the transition to alternative, renewable energy sources. With this important step towards making our own tugs more environmentally friendly, we are setting a good example in the port of Antwerp."
Award for another project
CMB already received the Sustainability Award last year for its "Hydroville" shuttle, a passenger ferry with limited capacity and performance, which is also equipped with dual-fuel technology. This vessel is now used for sustainable commuter transport in the port area.
"We are convinced of the potential of hydrogen as the key to sustainable shipping and the energy transition," says Alexander Saverys, CEO of Compagnie Maritime Belge. "The expertise we are acquiring with the Hydrotug will enable us to further develop the use of hydrogen as a marine fuel."
