Container handling in the port of Antwerp grows
In the first quarter of the year, sea freight throughput at the port of Antwerp normalized compared to the record levels of the first quarter of 2018. However, a new upward trend emerged again over the course of the quarter.
Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Antwerp Port Authority, explains: "Our container throughput continues to grow despite the weaker economic outlook. This is good news for the port of Antwerp and consolidates our excellent position as a container hub in the global logistics chain. "Container traffic continued to grow. In March, the best monthly result in the port's history was achieved.
Although conventional breakbulk performed well in the first quarter of 2019, the figures were only moderate compared to the first quarter of 2018: handling of iron and steel remained 5% below the previous year's level as a result. RoRo throughput recorded growth of 3.2% in the first three months of the year.
In the first quarter, bulk cargo throughput fell by 8.8% overall, which was due to lower throughput of ore (-22.9%), coal (-16.5%), scrap (-10.2%) and fertilizers (2.2%), while throughput of sand and gravel was 6% higher in the first quarter. Liquid bulk recorded a decline of 8.6% in the first quarter.
