Panattoni, project developer for industrial and logistics real estate in Europe, celebrated the laying of the foundation stone for the new DB Schenker land transport terminal in Herbrechtingen (Baden-Württemberg), north-east of Ulm, together with DB Schenker on October 5.

With the multifunctional cross-dock terminal, DB Schenker will be relocating its land transportation office from Ulm to Herbrechtingen from May 2022, thereby increasing its capacity. The future site is located in the Robert-Bosch-Straße industrial estate, directly adjacent to the A7 federal highway as an important north-south link and in the immediate vicinity of the A8 Stuttgart-Munich highway.

A transshipment hall including a separate two-storey office and administration building is being built on a site area of 40,000 square meters. In addition to around 7,000 square meters of logistics space, the property comprises 2,000 square meters of office and social space, around 300 square meters of warehouse space and around 15,200 square meters of paved outdoor space. In addition, there are 70 car, 71 truck and 40 trailer parking spaces as well as access via a total of 74 ramps, including a dock leveller for trucks with exceptionally large loading volumes. The structural design of the logistics property enables highly optimized loading and unloading processes, which ensure particularly fast handling of goods and merchandise. Sustainability was a particular focus during the planning phase. The new cross-dock will be DGNB Gold certified and will be equipped with a WGK 3 foil to prevent hazards when handling water-polluting substances, e-charging stations, measures to recycle waste water and rainwater and noise protection, among other things.

"The laying of the foundation stone is an important step in the realization of the time-consuming project for DB Schenker. With the modern cross-dock, the logistics service provider has a new hub to further consolidate its overland transport network. We would like to thank DB Schenker and the town of Herbrechtingen for their confidence in us and for the cooperation with all those involved in the project," says Fred-Markus Bohne, Managing Partner at Panattoni.

"In the run-up to the building construction, we carried out extensive earthworks on the site. In the meantime, the shell of the cross-dock made of precast concrete elements has already been completed and the façade work has started. The foundation work for the office building is now also underway. The teams from LIST Bau Bielefeld and LIST Ingenieure are working together with everyone involved on a daily basis to keep to the ambitious schedule. We are therefore very confident that the cross-dock can go into operation as planned in May 2022," reports René Konrad, Managing Director of LIST Bau Bielefeld GmbH & Co.

"The new land transport terminal will enable us to grow further and is also of great strategic importance for DB Schenker due to its good transport connections. With the new capacities offered by a modern, sustainable cross-dock, we are increasing productivity and thus efficiency for our customers," explains Ralf Többe, Head of Land Transport at DB Schenker in the Germany/Switzerland cluster.

Daniel Vogt, Mayor of the town of Herbrechtingen, confirmed at the groundbreaking ceremony: "We are delighted that DB Schenker, a major international logistics service provider, is setting up in Herbrechtingen. This will further strengthen our business location."

Thomas Diem, First Alderman of the town of Herbrechtingen, added: "DB Schenker's establishment in our town is the result of professional cooperation between all the companies involved and our authorities. Together with Mayor Vogt, I am looking forward to the moment when the Cross-Dock opens."
