Herma enters the world of robotics
Herma is presenting a new type of printing and labeling system at Fachpack. The self-adhesive specialist relies on an automation solution with a module from Universal Robots (UR).
The collaborative 6-axis industrial robot UR 3 takes over the labeling of a wide variety of packaging with variable labeling positions - and does so in throughput. "Individual product labeling for just-in-time production, quality assurance, product traceability and track & trace are also becoming increasingly important in the packaging and logistics sector. Our innovative printing and labeling system ensures that labels are applied quickly, accurately and extremely flexibly. The UR robot arm moves to the defined labelling positions on the products and applies the label with millimetre precision on the fly," says Ulrich Fischer, Head of Product Management at HERMA GmbH. "A robot-assisted solution like this can make processes more efficient, especially in the logistics and shipping sector, where very different packaging sizes are produced."
The printed label is transferred to a vacuum suction plate mounted on the robot arm. During the transfer from the suction plate, the UR robot rolls the label precisely onto the respective packaging using a roller. Once the labeling process is complete, the robot arm moves back to its starting position. The next labeling process can begin. When selecting the robotics supplier, Herma was impressed by the modern safety function for force limitation, with which UR robots automatically stop if their movement is impeded, as well as the simple programming and worldwide availability. A UR robot continuously monitors its force and switches off in the event of a collision with humans or equipment. Therefore, they can be operated in space-constrained areas with no or minimal guarding in close proximity to humans.
In addition to the collaborative industrial robot, the new solution from Herma consists of standard components from the modular Herma building block system. These include a rewinder and unwinder as well as a Zebra ZE500-6 thermal transfer printer. A print resolution of up to 300 dpi ensures legibility of the printed image.
The innovative printing and labeling system from Herma can be positioned in any orientation and offers many options for integration into existing production lines. "Robotics is an increasingly important topic for labeling and logistics tasks; it enables completely new approaches to solutions. Our innovative, flexible printing and labeling system is just the first milestone in our entry into robotics; others are in the pipeline. Last but not least, we expect significant increases in efficiency in human-machine cooperation as a result," says Martin Kühl, Head of Herma's Labeling Machines Division.
