Warehouse-/Picking technology

Let it be green

Anyone planning, building or modernizing a warehouse or distribution center cannot ignore the issue of lighting. LED luminaires are ahead in terms of sustainability. They save electricity and consequently also CO2 emissions. All the experts surveyed by Materialfluss recommend switching to LEDs.

Material flow: Why is LED lighting the key technology when it comes to saving electricity in the warehouse? Are there any alternatives?

Uwe Graf: According to ZVEI surveys, up to 80 percent of a company's total energy costs are spent on lighting in warehouses. In production, the expenditure is between 15 and 25 percent and in offices up to 50 percent. Trilux LED lighting systems with light management reduce energy requirements by up to 80 percent compared to conventional systems with fluorescent lamps, and in some cases even more. No other measure can achieve such large relative and absolute energy savings with lighting at manageable investment costs.

MFL: A well-lit workplace in the warehouse and saving energy at the same time - how do you reconcile the two? Do you have any tips for companies that want to modernize their warehouse in the near future?Graf: LED technology is the basis for major energy savings. However, to achieve optimum results, a great deal of expertise must go into planning the lighting installation and the light management system as well as developing the luminaires. By selecting suitable luminous flux packages and appropriate beam characteristics as well as by professionally designing the entire system, Trilux ensures that workplaces are illuminated efficiently and to a high standard at the same time. Aspects such as simple installation, high operational reliability and low maintenance requirements, which Trilux offers its customers in line with its brand philosophy "Simplify your Light", should also not be neglected.

Material flow: Why is LED lighting the key technology when it comes to saving electricity in the warehouse? Are there any alternatives?

Marcus Blumberg: LED technology currently offers the greatest potential for energy savings in the lighting sector. In combination with a light management system (e.g. presence or daylight detection), costs can be reduced by up to 80 percent compared to conventional lighting. LEDs are also much easier to maintain than conventional luminaires due to their long service life. There are no replacement costs for light sources, which means that there is additional savings potential when considering the total cost of ownership. Conventional lighting technology also offers potential savings, but not on the same scale as LED technology.

MFL: A well-lit workplace in the warehouse and saving energy at the same time - how do you reconcile the two? Do you have any tips for companies that want to modernize their warehouse in the near future?Blumberg: The essential basis for a perfectly illuminated workplace is professional lighting planning and on-site consultation. In addition to the applicable normative guidelines of DIN12464 (workplace lighting), specific customer requirements can also be taken into account. By taking stock of the current lighting situation and subsequent lighting planning, it is possible to create an individual and transparent "return on investment" calculation. We offer this service to our customers free of charge as a first step. Comprehensive support from the beginning to the end of the project and even beyond guarantees complete customer satisfaction and is our claim.

Material flow: Why is LED lighting the key technology when it comes to saving electricity in the warehouse? Are there any alternatives?

Daniel Hangst: LED lighting solutions are state of the art today. They are unbeatable when it comes to energy efficiency. Compared to old systems, they can sometimes save more than 50 percent energy. But LED solutions also contribute to cost savings in terms of longevity and ease of maintenance. As acquisition costs have fallen significantly in recent years, the payback period for most refurbishment projects is less than five years.

MFL: A well-lit workplace in the warehouse and saving energy at the same time - how do you reconcile the two? Do you have any tips for companies that want to modernize their warehouse in the near future?Hangst: Energy efficiency and optimum lighting conditions are by no means mutually exclusive in modern lighting solutions - quite the opposite. For optimum light, lighting systems are tailored precisely to the specific project requirements. They take into account the dimensions of the hall, in particular the height, the amount of daylight, the equipment - such as existing shelving and its position - and all the work to be carried out there. For example, warehouse employees should not be severely dazzled when looking up from the forklift truck. As light is only needed in the warehouse where an employee is currently located, the use of presence detectors is predestined to reduce additional energy consumption, even with LED lighting. My tip is therefore to take advantage of good advice and lighting design in order to obtain the lighting solution that best meets individual requirements.
