Apotea expands automated warehouse solution with SSI Schaefer

With the help of the expansion of the automated warehouse solution, the fast-growing online pharmacy will ship around 700,000 parcels per month in the future. To meet the increasing demand, Apotea, the first pure mail-order pharmacy in Sweden, has commissioned SSI Schaefer to expand its existing warehouse solution. In recent years, Apotea had already built a sustainable logistics center due to its rapid growth and equipped it with an automated system from SSI Schaefer.

The online pharmacy Apotea received an award as Sweden's most popular online store and is highly valued by customers for fast deliveries, fair prices and a unique customer experience. To ensure this quality of service in the future, Apotea is once again working with SSI Schaefer to further develop and optimize its logistics structure.

Back in 2019, SSI Schaefer developed and implemented an automated picking solution with an A-Frame for Apotea. The A-Frame enables complex orders to be processed quickly, even at peak times. Due to the fact that replenishment and picking are separate processes, the A-Frame is replenished when the workload is low, while picking is fully automated at peak times. This enables optimum staff utilization in the warehouse, low error rates and significantly improved performance. The system was only fully installed in the fall of 2019, but due to Apotea's rapid growth, an expansion is necessary to almost double the capacity.

"We are very satisfied with the existing A-Frame and how it has efficiently increased our capacity," says Pär Svärdson, CEO at Apotea. "Therefore, we will also implement the new automated solution together with SSI Schaefer and I am very much looking forward to seeing our new, even faster A-Frame live in operation."

With the existing A-Frame, Apotea can store up to 1,500 products and pick up to 1,400 orders per hour. This will soon be supported by an additional A-Frame that can process 1,000 more orders per hour. The system will go into operation in 2021.
