Volvo Trucks announces the start of sales of its Volvo FL and Volvo FE electric vehicles in selected European markets. The company wants to meet the increasing demand for sustainable transportation solutions in urban environments.

Sales will start in Sweden, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands. Series production is planned for March 2020. The Volvo FL Electric has a capacity for a gross vehicle weight of 16 tons, that of the Volvo FE Electric is 27 tons. Thanks to the low noise level, the electric trucks can be used for deliveries and collections early in the morning, late in the evening and at night. The electric vehicles also open up new possibilities in urban planning and road infrastructure; electrically powered vehicles are suitable for indoor terminals and low emission zones, for example.

New solutions required
"Global urbanization urgently requires emission-free and low-noise inner-city logistics. With the Volvo FL and the Volvo FE Electric, we can meet both the high environmental requirements and the commercial needs of our customers," says Jonas Odermalm, VP Product Line Electromobility.

Positive customer feedback
The Volvo FL and Volvo FE Electric models were developed in close cooperation with customers in Gothenburg, Sweden. According to the company, the responsive drivetrain, seamless acceleration and smooth running of the trucks were rated very positively by the drivers involved. "While customer feedback has been positive," explains Jonas Odermalm, "we recognize that the charging infrastructure is still under development in most cities and are working with public and private partners on a long-term strategy for expanding the charging infrastructure. However, it is clear that the development of this infrastructure must be accelerated."
