Fewer freight entries in 2023

In the fourth quarter of 2023, there was a total of 18% more freight entries than in the previous year. The increase at the end of the year is partly due to the fact that demand rose in particular as a result of seasonal activities such as Christmas business, restocking and increased consumer activity before the holidays.

As many carriers reduced their capacities, the ratio of freight to loading space has risen visibly, as Timocom's transport barometer shows. Overall, 2023 was characterized by a significant decline in the volume of freight entries on the spot market.

Across Europe, submissions fell by 31% last year, and within Germany by as much as 40%. This indicates that the economic downturn expected by many economic institutes since the beginning of 2023 was also felt in the transport market last year.

Transport prices: Increase in the fourth quarter of 2023

In contrast, the transport prices offered on the German market rose in the fourth quarter. Prices for truck transports were up to 10% higher than in the previous year, but below the peak values of 2021. This development is primarily due to higher wage and energy costs.

In addition, transporters reduced their truck entries in the fourth quarter by a total of 15.3% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. In December, there were even 21 percent fewer load space entries than in the previous year.

Transport barometer: Price increase of 12 percent in 2024

According to transport associations, transport prices will have to rise significantly in 2024. Estimates assume an increase of up to 12%, driven by additional costs, particularly the rise in toll charges in Germany.
