Scania supports large-scale market launch of gas-powered trucks

As part of a consortium, Scania wants to drive forward the large-scale market launch of gas-powered trucks in Europe. The BioLNG EuroNet consortium aims to promote the Europe-wide use of LNG (liquefied natural gas) in road freight transport.

The group consisting of Shell, Disa, Scania, Osomo and Iveco wants to put a further 2,000 LNG-powered trucks on Europe's roads, provide 39 LNG filling stations and commission a bio-LNG production plant in the Netherlands. The LNG filling stations are to be built approximately every 400 kilometers along the main transport routes from Spain to Poland as part of a network that includes Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. The planned production plant will produce 3,000 million tons of LNG per year from biomethane produced from waste.

Filling stations as an important piece of the puzzle
"LNG is becoming an increasingly affordable fuel for heavy-duty trucks, making it an important source of energy for the emerging transportation sector," says Istvάn Kapitάny, Executive Vice President, Shell Retail. "Shell is committed to delivering more and more low-carbon energy to our customers. New LPG filling stations are an important piece of the puzzle. I look forward to the moment when this important network of filling stations will be available to European drivers in the coming years."

Filling stations, production facilities and conveyors
"The program includes filling stations, biofuel production and subsidies, because that's what progressive customers who want to invest in these trucks despite the initial extra costs need," says Jonas Nordt, Director Sustainable Transport Solutions, Scania. "While LNG, which reducesCO2 emissions by around 20 percent, is much more widely available today, biogas, which achieves a 90 percent reduction inCO2 emissions, is increasingly being blended with natural gas as biogas production intensifies."
