New safety standard for truck parking
Europe is introducing a uniform standard for safe truck parking: EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc presented the new regulations and an accompanying study in the European Parliament on November 6.
In future, the new standard should enable truck drivers throughout Europe to spend their rest periods in a safe environment. DEKRA experts helped to develop the catalog of requirements. "This uniform standard is a significant step towards improving the working conditions of drivers and the safety of transportation," said Lothar Weihofen, Head of the DEKRA Business Assurance unit, at the presentation of the new regulations in Brussels. "A crucial point for successful implementation is the neutral auditing and certification of the rest areas by an independent third party in order to establish a consistent level of safety throughout Europe."
Protection for: Driver, vehicle and property
The aim is to ensure the protection and integrity of drivers, transported goods and vehicles. A consortium of transport associations, transport experts and DEKRA as the certification company worked together on the development on behalf of the European Union.
Standard already in pilot parking lots
The "Safe and Secure Truck Park Area (SSTPA)" standard has already been introduced at a number of selected parking lots, for example in Béziers in southern France, Barcelona in Spain and Lugoj in Romania.
