Hinterland and ports better connected
New connections to the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp
DB Cargo is offering new connections to and from the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp. From December, the rail freight operator will be linking the western ports with the most important economic centers in the German port hinterland on a daily basis. From next year, the transport volume on these connections is set to increase by around 100,000 containers per year.
"For our customers in Antwerp and Rotterdam, we are building on what we have been doing successfully for many years with our network in other ports such as Hamburg. We are ready! With the new departures from the western ports alone, we are relieving the burden on the environment and roads by 70,000 trucks a year," says Dr. Sigrid Nikutta, Member of the Management Board for Freight Transport at Deutsche Bahn and CEO of DB Cargo. The ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam handle 27 million containers a year. However, only eight to eleven percent of freight to and from the western ports is transported by rail. The situation is different in Hamburg: the third largest port in Europe has a rail share of over 50 percent.
