Prototype presented
Mercedes-Benz Wörth plant to start series production of the eActros in 2021
"Now & Next" - under this motto, Mercedes-Benz Trucks presented new products at the Wörth site and gave an outlook on the future of sustainable mobility.
Among the innovations presented is a near-series prototype of the battery-electric eActros for heavy-duty distribution transport, which provides a concrete preview of the future series vehicle. Series production is scheduled to start at the Wörth plant in 2021 - in addition to the existing production of trucks with combustion engines. The eEconic, designed specifically for municipal use, is based on the Mercedes-Benz eActros and is set to go into series production from 2022.
Dr. Matthias Jurytko, Head of Location and Production at the Wörth plant: "I am delighted that we will be building the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz eActros here in Wörth in future. The start of series production next year is an important milestone for the site and the region. We are thus expanding the portfolio of the Wörth plant and consistently taking a further step towardsCO2-neutral transportation." Electromobility also opens up prospects for employees in production, as it creates new areas of responsibility and job profiles. Dr. Matthias Jurytko: "The site is currently working hard to prepare for the requirements of truck production in connection with electric drives. For example, we are currently training our future experts in the field of high-voltage - these are indispensable skills when it comes to the assembly of vehicle batteries and the construction of an electric truck."
The employees have also confirmed their decision in favor of the site. Thomas Zwick, Chairman of the Works Council at the Wörth plant: "Especially in these times, it is a very good and important signal that we have been able to bring the first assembly of the series eActros to Wörth. We worked hard to achieve this and I am proud that we have been entrusted with the construction of our future products. We are thus securing employment at the site and, together with the workforce, are taking the path ahead of us: the transformation of an entire industry towards new drive systems, greater flexibility and networking."
Electric and conventional models largely in line
The electric truck models are planned flexibly alongside trucks with conventional drive systems during assembly. In principle, the assembly of different vehicle types should be integrated as far as possible and the basic structure of the vehicle should be built on one assembly line - regardless of whether a conventional combustion engine or an electric drivetrain is installed. Depending on the vehicle type, certain adjustments are made to the production process. The installation of various non-conventional drive components takes place in a separate process, including the assembly of the electric drivetrain for the eActros: the heart of the future eActros production is the production hall in building 75 at the Wörth plant.
Conversion work and preparations for the new production processes have been underway there for around a year. This includes the construction of a new assembly line, on which the complete electrical assembly of the eActros, in particular the high-voltage components, and its commissioning will take place in future. The vehicles will then be reintegrated into the regular production process for finishing and final acceptance.
