Utility vehicles: Mercedes-Benz produces 1,000,000 heavy-duty engines

Mannheim/Detroit, 21.06.2018 - The Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim and the Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) subsidiary Detroit Diesel Corporation have jointly reached a special milestone: together, the two production facilities have produced a total of 1,000,000 heavy-duty engines. These are used in heavy-duty commercial vehicles. The millionth inline six-cylinder engine rolled off the production line at the Mannheim engine plant.

For over ten years, Daimler Trucks has been relying on a standardized platform for the drivetrain of heavy-duty trucks, essentially comprising the engine, axles and transmission. Detroit Diesel started series production of the heavy-duty engine in 2007, followed by production of the in-line six-cylinder engine at the Mannheim site around three years later.

Although production and important components are standardized, this generation of engines is designed in such a way that it can be flexibly adapted to the respective customer and market requirements using the same technology in the USA, Europe and Japan. The in-line six-cylinder engine powers heavy-duty commercial vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz Actros, Freightliner Cascadia and Super Great from Fuso as well as Mercedes-Benz coaches and intercity buses. mm
